The times and the crowds were changing. When you go from, generally speaking, playing college gyms and old movie theatres in '70-'71 to NFL football stadiums by '73 you literally open the door to lots of new .... stuff.
The large outdoor summer crowds by '73-'74 had lots of drinking and fighting, etc. The Roosevelt Stadium show from '74 released as a DP contains similar pleadings from band members to stop fighting, climbing, etc. (Weir: "It's barbed wire, and it's gonna cut ya!").
The drinkers wanted their socks knocked off by a smokin' Johnny B. Goode. Every song. Slower, more soulful musical contemplations weren't making it for them.
